A personal brand is not a product.

September 24, 2026 · The Jason Katz Newsletter

Hi,

You built an audience before you had anything to sell it.

When you leave a stable job, the advice is always the same: build your personal brand. Publish, get visible, and the right people will find you.

That feels like the safe first move. Distribution before commitment, reach before you've locked in exactly what you do.

But an audience does not ask what you're selling. It only watches. And watching is not the same as needing.

A personal brand is a distribution channel, not a product. It tells you how to reach people. It says nothing about what you send through it.

In a job, the thing you make is never in question. It sits on the org chart, handed to you on day one. On your own, nobody hands you the thing.

A track record is not a product. It is a reason to believe you could build one, and those are not the same. One of them, a person can buy.

The fix isn't a better brand. It's one plain sentence: who you help, and what problem you solve, said the way you'd say it at dinner. Could you finish it right now?

Onward.

Follower count, not audience fit, still decides what creators earn CreatorIQ's 2026 State of Creators report found follower count has the strongest correlation with creator earnings, even as brands claim to prioritize engagement and fit. Sixty-seven percent of creators still earn under $10,000 a year despite that reach. Visibility and being valuable turn out to be two different markets, and only one of them pays.

Customers can use your product and still not see its value Harvard Business Review's August research found B2B customers frequently benefit from a product but cannot clearly measure, articulate, or defend that value inside their own company. The gap stays invisible during growth, then surfaces later as stalled renewals and pricing pressure. Being useful and being understood are not the same achievement.

Consumer understanding gaps are now marketing's top strategic threat Gartner's 2026 CMO Spend Survey found that shifts in consumer understanding are the single largest external factor CMOs say is reshaping marketing strategy this year. Even companies with real reach are finding that reach doesn't guarantee the market understands what they do. The audience showing up is not the same as the audience getting it.

p.s. When you're ready, here's what changes.

Founder-dependency is a systems problem. Kindling builds custom AI-powered software that runs your operations, replaces duct tape, and unlocks capacity, without more headcount. The business runs without you in the middle. Output and standards go up. Headcount doesn't. The off-the-shelf software era is over.
